kl. 18:00 - 20:00
In relation to the exhibition Stepping Out!, GL STRAND has invited Tofu Collective to create a reading room in GL STRAND – a pop-up installation where visitors are invited to immerse themselves in a large selection of special publications that wishes to provide a broader knowledge of gender, body and identity in today’s China through a diversity of voices.
For the opening, Tofu Collective has invited artist Yi Ten Lai (CH/ES, 1998) to make a tea performance. Following the performance, the elements of the performance will remain as part of the installation and develop througout the opening period. Yi Ten Lai’s work Transepto is installed in the ceiling surrounded by ceramic and textile works, seeking to push the visitors’ cultural decoding of materials, emphasizing the room’s function as a dialogue between East and West.
In addition to the large collection of publications, you can also experience Berlin-based artist Popo Fan’s (CH, 1985) documentary The VaChina Monologues, which, through a re-actualization of the play The Vagina Monologues, documents the reenactments of the play in various places in China, focusing on sexual liberation and breaking down the taboo of gender discrimination.
Tofu Collective is an association dedicated to promoting emerging contemporary artists from East Asia. Through collaborative initiatives spanning publications, exhibitions and events, they wish to promote the new generation of creative voices in and from East Asia.
Reading Room is supported by S. C. Van Fonden
